Something to think on……


¨Every time you use the oxy-acetylene equipment, if certain safety guidelines are not followed, it would be the same as handling live explosives ready to go off…….

ACETYLENE CYLINDERS

¨Maroon in colour.
¨Acetylene gas (C2H2) is dissolved in acetone (liquid) and stored at 250 psi, in a specially designed cylinder.
¨Acetylene cylinders has a volume of 8.5 m3.
¨
OXYGEN CYLINDERS

¨Oxygen is a colourless, tasteless, and odourless gas and is slightly heavier than air.
¨Oxygen cylinder is black in colour.
¨Oxygen stored at 2200 psi
¨Oxygen cylinders has a volume of 6.9 m3

qWarning -Always keep the regulator free of oil, grease and other flammable substances
q Never use oil or grease on the regulator, cylinder or manifold connection
qDO NOT change the inlet connection on a regulator in an attempt to use the regulator for a different gas service

 The Hoses
qThe hoses are usually color coded
qOxygen(blue)   
qAcetylene(red)
qBe careful not to use other hoses, such as air lines,
q LP gas, etc.
qBe careful around sharp objects, they can be cut very easily
qThey are constructed of flame retardant materials,
qbut will burn if there is a flashback or exposed to sustained heat
qHoses are graded
    Make sure you are using the right hose for the right gas
Hose
qKeep welding hoses clear of any failing metal, slag or sparks.
qNever allow hoses to become coated with oil, grease or dirt.  Such coatings could conceal damaged areas.
qExamine the hoses before attaching to welding torch handle or regulators.
qIf cuts, burns, worn areas or damaged fittings are found, replace the hose.
qCompletely replace welding hose if it contains multiple splices or when cracks or severe wear is noticed.

¨Using operating pressure too low for the tip.
¨Loose fitting of nozzle / tip.
¨hose run-over by vehicle during welding
¨Incorrect selection of Flashback arrester.
¨Hoses of incorrect diameter.
¨Over heating of blowpipe tip, worn out, undersized.

pClose control valve of O2 blowpipe.
pClose spindle valve of O2 cylinder.
pSpray water to acetylene cylinder from a distance.

FIRE ON CYLINDER

üClose the valve
üTry to extinguish the fire.
üDetach the regulator
üImmerse the cylinder in
      water or apply  water copiously
     at the bottom half of the cylinder.
üOpen the valve and keep it the cool water till it becomes empty
üDo not stand in the direction of fusible safety valve fixed at the bottom of the cylinder.

øLeave Key wrenches on cylinder when in use.
øKeep DA cylinder in an upright position.
øEnsure it is secured to a solid structure and on a solid base so that it does not fall over.
