"Swine flu" refers to influenza in pigs. Occasionally, pigs transmit influenza viruses to people, mainly to hog farmers and veterinarians. Less often, someone infected passes the infection to others.

Causes of swine flu:


Swine flu is caused by influenza, which is an acute viral infection that mainly affects the nose, throat, bronchial tubes and occasionally the lungs. There are three types of influenza viruses: type A, B and C


Influenza type A viruses are classified into subtypes one of those influenza A subtypes, the virus (H1N1) is commonly known as "swine flu".


Symptoms of Swine Flu :


Most of the symptoms are same as seasonal virus. They can include;




* Sore throat and head aches

* Cough

* Stomach pains and vomiting
* Fever

* Stuffy or running nose

* Loss of appetite, body pain

* Fever of over 101 degree Fahrenheit for over two days.

* Breath lessness & Chills

* Fatigue


How does Swine Flu spread?

* Influenza A (H1N1) virus seems to be as contagious as seasonal influenza, and it is spreading particularly among young people in the 10 to 45 age group among pregnant women.

It is transmitted from person to person when one inhales or comes into contact with drops or small particles that are expelled when an infected person coughs or sneezes.


 Swine Flu Do's

* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Use disposable masks in airports, crowded markets.

* Wash your hands often with soap water, especially after you cough or sneeze.

* Use hand cleaners / hand wash while washing your hands (e.g. Germ Free)

* Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

* If you are sick, please stay at home and limit contact with others as much as possible.
* Always maintain high levels of personal hygiene, especially before and after food preparation and in & out of toilets.

* While in an affected region, seek immediate medical attention if you develop influenza like symptoms (High Fever, body pain, coughing, and red nose)

* Get plenty of sleep.

* Rest and take plenty of liquids.


Swine Flu Dont's

* Touch your eyes, nose or mouth, germs spread this way.

* Visit live animal markets, poultry farms and pigs in the affected countries.

* Spit in public

* Take medication without consulting a doctor.
* Forget about covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze

* Careless and seek medical advice if necessary.




Prevent measure of swine flu :

* Stay home when you are sick

* If you suffer from flu-like symptoms (fever, runny nose, cold, sore throat, nausea / vomiting), isolate yourself to avoid transmitting the infection to others, as the disease is spread by triplet infection to cough and sneeze

* Inform the doctor, either family doctor or preferably in a government, hospitals, as they are better equipped and take the necessary treatment.

* undergo a nasal / throat swab test following government advice. doctors as required in recognized centers.

* Do not self-medicate, it could be dangerous.
* Avoid going to crowded places such as markets, shopping centers and air ports, railway stations if possible. Keep a safe distance from suspicious people.

* Be careful with older people, children, pregnant women and people with TB, HIV, diabetes, chronic pulmonary / heart and neurological diseases and cancer, as they are more susceptible.

* Develop healthy habits such as a nutritious diet, drinking water, enough rest, sleep and breathing exercises.

* Do not share items such as cigarettes, glasses or cups, lipsticks, toys or anything that may be contaminated with respiratory secretions.

* Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil (commonly known as Nilgiri oil) in lukewarm water of Luke or in the handkerchief and inhaling can stimulate the immune system.
