Vibration leads to occupational ill-health by using vibrating work tools. When using these tools vibration is transmitted into the worker’s body, hands and arms causing Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) and Whole Body Vibration (WBV)
Hand Arm Vibration is caused by vibration transmitted into workers hands and arms when using hand held power tools such as hammer drills, chainsaws or hand-guided tools like Grinders, Hand Compactor etc. It can also result from holding materials that are being processed by machinery. It can cause Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

Symptoms of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS):
Severe pain in hands & arms


Disabling condition that affects the nerves, blood vessels, muscles and joints.
Tingling and numbness in the fingers
Reduces grip strength and the sense of touch
* Affects the blood circulation

Symptoms of Carpal tunnel Syndrome (CTS):
*You may experience tingling and numbness in your fingers or hand, especially your    thumb and index, middle or ring fingers, but not your little finger
*You may experience weakness in your hand and a tendency to drop objects.

Causes of HAV:
* Prolonged and regular exposure to vibration can cause damage to nerve endings and affect blood circulation.
* Hand arm vibration is seriously debilitating and can affect your work and your social life a great deal.

Precautions for HAV:
 If you are experiencing tingling in your hands, stop work and take rest
* Always keep hands warm, cold exposure can accelerate the hand arm vibration syndrome

* Use anti vibration gloves, it also keep the hands warm

*Avoid working continuously on the vibrating equipment

* Maintain and repair hand guided tools regularly

* Make sure to avoid gripping the tools too tightly
Implement job rotation and time limits on activities with high exposure to vibration activities





Whole-body vibration (WBV) mainly affects drivers of vehicles used off-road, such as dumpers, excavators and tractors etc. However, it can also affect drivers of some vehicles used on paved surfaces, such as lift trucks or on rails, such as gantry cranes.

WBV is associated mostly with low back pain. However, back pain can also be caused by other factors, such as manual handling and postural strains and while exposure to vibration and shocks may be painful for people with back problems.
Causes of WBV:
* Poor design of controls, making it difficult for the driver to operate the machine or vehicle easily or to see properly without twisting or stretching
* Incorrect adjustment by the driver of the seat position and hand and foot controls, so that it is necessary to continually twist, bend, lean and stretch to operate the machine.
* Sitting for long periods without being able to change position.
* Poor drive posture
* Excessive exposure to shocks and jolts.
* Repeatedly climbing into or jumping down from a high cab or one which is difficult to get in and out of.

The risk increases where the driver or operator is exposed to two or more of these factors together.
Precautions for  WBV:
Ø  Minimize continuous use on vibrating equipment by providing regular intervals.
Ø  Use rubber mats and provide shoes with thick rubber soles
Ø  Keep site roadways level, fill in potholes and remove debris
Ø  Maintain and repair machine and vehicle suspension systems, check tyre pressures and suspension seats regularly to avoid excessive vibration.
