Crane Operation

Crane Operation

The  potential of hazards and risks associated with crane lifting operations are utmost important.

To reduce the risks and hazards associated with the crane operations, Operators and concerned personnel involved in material handling should take appropriate safety measures. Competent person should train the personnel involved in crane related operations during material handling.

Hazards associated with crane :

1) Overturning of the crane

2) Improper load balance

3) Collision with obstacles

4)Falling objects

5)Mechanical failure

6)Over loading

7)Excessive speeds/ sudden operation/ braking.

8)Inappropriate hand signals/ communication.

9) Inadequate inspection and maintenance of crane.

10)Unguarded/ moving/ revolving parts.

11)Improper using of outriggers/ level flooring.

12)Touching overhead power lines / Working too close to power lines.

13)Age of crane* to ensure adequate safety factors.

Planning before startup:

1)Erection scheme must be prepared by competent person.

2)  Ensure a competent person inspects machinery and equipment.

3)  Green card to be displayed prior to use.

4)Positioning outriggers with base plate on rigid/ firm compacted soil during usage.

5)Determine the location of overhead power lines.

6) Know the job site conditions (e.g. unstable soil or high winds).

7)Make other personnel on the job site aware of hoisting activities.

8) Barricade access within the swing radius.

9) Consider the load limiting factors.

10)Consider safe lifting principles during operation.

11) Integrity & stability of loads shall be verified before lifting.

Crane operation:

1) Provide safe means of access and egress

2) The crane shall only be operated on a firm, level ground that adequately supports the weight of the crane and loads.

3) The weight of the load shall not exceed the Safe Working Load.

4)Never abruptly swing or stop the crane.

5) Loads shall not be dragged on the ground.

6)Move the load at a safe speed

7)Before lifting, fully extend the outriggers and ensure their stability on the ground.

8)Adjust the boom length to ensure the crane is operating within the extent of the safe operation radius.

9) Operator shall use reverse horn / swing alarm at the appropriate time.

10)Ensure no overhead lines are present nearby lifting / swinging area.

11)Ensure signal man to indicate / guide the operator.

12)Use guide ropes / tag line to prevent the swinging of materials.

13)No person shall work /stand under the suspended load.

Crane operator responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1) Be trained on the specific model of crane being used.

2) Be totally familiar with load charts and all crane functions listed in the operator’s manual.

3) Inspecting and maintaining the crane regularly/ Daily checks & checks before operation.

4)Check site conditions and coordinate all activities with site supervision.
