Mobile crane safety hazards

Crane is a type of machine, generally equipped with a hoist, wire ropes or chains, and sheaves, that can be used both to lift and lower materials.

Types of Cranes:

1) Tyre mounted
2) crawler type

Causes of crane accidents:
The main causes of accidents that had been identified can be traced to the following:
a)     Lack of planning and supervision
b)    Incorrect siting or setup of cranes
c)     Failure to correctly calculate or estimate the load
d)    Use of wrong lifting gears
e)     Faulty devices or machines

f)      Lack of proper maintenance

Considerations while using cranes:
Ø Weight of the job to be lifted
Ø Safe working load (SWL) of the crane
Ø Height at which the job is to be erected
Ø Centre of gravity of the job
Ø Leverage
Ø Stability of the ground
Ø Climatic conditions

Basic safety requirements for crane:
Ø Boom angle indicator
Ø Over hoist limit switch
Ø Over load limit switch
Ø Safe Load Indicator (SLI)
Ø Hook Latch

Points to be remember :
Ø A Crane of safe working load (SWL) 50 MT doesn't mean that it can lift 50 MT in all conditions.
Ø Capacity of the crane varies as the angle / radius varies
Ø Hence forth always read the load chart before planning each lift
Ø Load chart given by one manufacturer cannot be used for cranes of other manufacture's even through of same capacity.
Ø Gross Weight = Net Weight + Weight of the lifting gear + Weight of the crane block
Ø When lifting the loads with cranes the weight on the sling varies as the angle varies.
