Hazards associated with excavator :

Most fatal and serious injuries involving excavators occur when the excavator is

Moving of excavator- and strike a pedestrian , particularly while reversing.

Controlling Risk of excavator :

Exclusion of excavator - People should be kept away from areas of excavator operation by the provision of suitable barriers. Most excavator related deaths involve a person working in the vicinity of the excavator rather than the driver.

Clearance of excavator : When swinging clearance of over 0.5m Needs to be maintained between any part of the machine, particularly the counter weight and the nearest obstruction.

Equipment Fitness of excavator : Ensure the fitness of equipment by a competent person and regular checking shall be followed.

Overhead power lines of excavator : Take appropriate safety measures.

Signaler of excavator: A signaler should be provided in a safe position to direct excavating operation and any pedestrian movements.

Swing Lock of excavator : Swing lock shall be provided during shifting / transportation of excavator

Bucket attachment of excavator: Check the bucket pin, quick coupler regularly. Only use manufacture recommended bucket pin.

Swing alarm of excavator: Swing alarm should be provided.

Underground utilities of excavator : Identify underground utilities before start the work.

Training and competence  of excavator

There are two categories of workers who must be trained and competent regarding the excavator hazard and precautions

Drivers / operators of excavator : should be trained, competent and authorized to operate the specific excavator.

Signalers of excavator : should be trained , competent and authorized to direct excavator movements and where possible, provided with a protected position from which they can work safely.
