Piling is the process of making deep foundations by using the method of drilling. Piles are generally used where soil in depth does not provide enough bearing reaction to support a heavily loaded pier, column or other member that transfer loads to the underlying soil.

Before starting of piling operation the following points are to be considered:
Ø  Stability of nearby structures, both their foundations and superstructures
Ø A careful investigation should be undertaken to ensure there are no any underground utilities which could lead to hazardous situations.
Ø  Overhead obstructions.
Ø  All lifting equipment’s and appliances must have appropriate load test certificates.
Ø  Nearby traffic movement is to be considered.
Ø All workers on the operation should be trained according to method operation.
Points to be considered when developing safe work method:
Ø  Pile type and construction method.
Ø  Piling rig selection and its working platform
Ø  Selection of crane against load to be lifted and crane load chart to be taken in to consideration during lifting operations.
Ø  Appropriate lifting gear accessories (e.g. size, type and condition of slings)
Ø  Site access/constraints are to be taken in to consideration while preparing safe work method for piling operation.
Ø  Other site operations (Multiple operations going nearby)
Ø  Environmental conditions like weather.
Ø  Proximity to the public, roads, railways, underground utilities and overhead assets
Ø  Briefing of site team regarding hazards/risks involved in piling operation
Ø  Site working hours are to be considered whether the work is being carried during day or night shift.
Hazards and risks associated with piling operation :
Ø  Contact with utilities services (e.g. overhead power lines and underground cables or pipes)
Ø  Noise and vibrations arising from the piling rigs.
Ø  Falls, including when inspecting or maintaining piling rigs and falls into pile holes or excavations.
Ø  Being struck by powered mobile plant, including working in close proximately to piling rigs and delivery vehicles.
Ø  Plant instability caused by gradients, variable ground conditions, and/or inadequate bearing capacity.
Ø  Crushing when moving materials, including when unloading piles from trucks and stacking them onsite.
Ø  Entanglement in the rotating parts of the pilling rigs.
Ø  Collapse of partially assembled piling rigs.
Ø  Collapse of excavations, nearby structures etc.
Ø  Falling loads due to use of inappropriate lifting gear.

Precautions :
Ø  Ensure non availability of underground utilities and overhead obstacles.
Ø  All the equipment’s should maintain safe distance of 3m radius from Low tension (LT) electrical lines and 8m radius from High tension (HT) electrical lines.
Ø  All persons associated with the piling operation should wear the appropriate protective equipment such as high visibility clothing (e.g. reflective types), hearing and eye protection (e.g. safety sunglasses, ear plugs), work gloves, protective head and footwear (e.g. helmets and safety boots)
Ø  Piling area should be barricaded to avoid trespassers.
Ø  All equipment’s (Pile Rig, Crawler cranes, Vibro hammers etc.) should be placed on a firm level base and /or crane footing mats shall be used.
Ø  Avoid un-authorized persons from operating piling equipment’s.
Ø  Do not start piling operation unless receiving work permit.
Ø  Do not let any kind of equipment’s un-attended when they are in ignited condition.
Ø  Rigging operation to be conducted by trained and competent riggers only.
