Eliminate Your Fears And Doubts About Blasting

Eliminate your fears and doubt about Blasting

An explosive is a chemical compound or mixture of compounds that undergoes a very rapid decomposition, when initiated by energy in the form of heat, impact or friction. Thus blasting operation demands a stricter commitment to safety, proper training, and product education. This article gives a proper way of working during transportation, handling, drilling, Loading, electrical short firing & disposal of explosive.

Eliminate your fears and doubt about Blasting

Blasting Do's:

Explosive Transportation:

Ø  For carrying out 5kg of explosives specially designed insulated containers may be used. These containers shall be constructed of finished wood of 50 mm thick or plastic & should be clearly marked for:
v  Mfg. name or trade name.
v  Name of the explosive.
v  Lot number.
v  Date of mfg. / Expiry date and
v  The words ͚EXPLOSIVES, HANDLE WITH CARE͛.
Ø  Each explosive container shall be provided with non-conductive device such as rubber, etc.
Ø  Explosives & detonators of blasting caps shall be transported in the different vehicles.
Ø  Two Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, each of more than 3 kg capacity shall be carried on vehicles carrying the explosives.

Storage and Handling of explosives :

Ø  Explosives & blasting caps - separate storing.
Ø  8 M all sides [clear] - free from vegetation, debris and combustible materials.
Ø  Storage should be leak proof & provided with firefighting equipment, not in wet / damp area
Ø  Only torches to be used in case of power failure
Ø  Put off shoes while entering magazine / magazine shoe without nails & bare foot dipped with water.
Ø  Handling of explosives shall be avoided during thunderstorm.
Ø  Smoking shall not be permitted nor the matches, open lights, fire shall be carried while handling the explosives.
Ø  Primers shall not be made up near excessive quantity of explosives or in excess of immediate.
Ø  Unauthorized persons shall not be present where explosives are being handled.

Drilling and loading :

Ø  Proper sequence of operation: Drilling a hole, Inserting a charge, Stemming & Firing.
Ø  The borehole shall be carefully checked for the length, presence of water, dust etc.
Ø  Surplus explosives shall not be stacked near the working area during loading.
Ø  Explosives shall not be forced down a borehole or on obstruction in a borehole.

Electrical short firing circuit :

Ø  Firing circuit shall be completely insulated from the ground or by the other conductor.
Ø  There shall not be any electric live wire or cable of any kind near the electric blasting caps or other explosives except at the time of firing.
Ø  The electric cap wires or the loading wires shall be kept short circuited until ready to fire.
Ø  All holes loaded on a shift shall be fired on the same shift.
Ø  Each electric blasting cap shall be tested with an approved galvanometer before & after tamping in a hole to determine whether it will carry the current.

Before and after the blasting :

Ø  All the approach to the site shall be closed by the barriers at a distance around 500 m, 15 minutes before the firing is to take place.

Ø  Loud wailing note of 1-minute duration shall be sounded on the sirens to warn the public before commencement of firing.

Ø Each borehole shall be thoroughly cleaned before the cartridge is inserted.

Ø  The blaster shall not return the blasting site after firing, until at least 5 Minutes have elapsed. In case of misfire no person shall be allowed to approach the blasting site for at least 30 minutes.

Ø  A new hole shall be drilled at least 60 cm away from the old bore & parallel to it & about 30 cm less in depth & the new hole charged & duly fired.

Ø  If a shift change is unavoidable, the person in charge of the out- going shift shall prior to leaving the shift inform the person relieving him of any case of misfired shorts, point out to him their positions duly cross marked.

Explosive Disposal:

Ø  Explosives shall be disposed off or destroyed strictly in accordance with the approved method.

Ø  Explosives, caps boxes or the material used in packing of explosives shall not be left lying around in places to which children or unauthorized persons can have access.

Blasting  Don'ts :

Ø  The filled containers shall not be dropped. And any person shall not carry explosives in the pockets.

Ø  No person shall strike, tamper with or attempt to remove the cap of the blasting cap.

Ø  No attempt shall be made to soften hard-set explosives by heating over a fire or by rolling the explosives on the ground.

Ø  No attempt shall be made to use any explosives or detonators which have been water soaked

Ø  No further drilling shall be started until previous holes in the blasted area are flushed with air & water.
